A few weeks ago, I got the urge to play something different.

But first, a little bit of context. I play A LOT of games mostly for achievements, but also because I just love gaming. Bad games, good games, and…well that kinda covers everything vaguely enough I guess.

So as I’m staring at my Xbox’s dashboard I think…you know, I haven’t touched Gears of War in a hot minute, let’s see what’s going on over there. And so I jumped back into Gears 4 for the first time in over a year and something strange happened. I got into it. Like really really into it. Not just the individual game but the whole shebangin franchise. Which is…kind of weird considering I’ve played every Gears game save for Judgment back on the 360.

All around me are familiar faces

After a few hours of multiplayer and horde, I fired up and completed the campaign in Gears 1 remastered (they called it “Gears of War Ultimate Edition” because of course they did). And it rocked. I’ve done that before, but now it just felt different. Like before I played through the games just to get through the campaign, and it’s not like I didn’t get emotional in the emotional beats. Now it just feels like…wanting to do more. Getting all the collectibles, not because they’re tied to an achievement (although they are, bonus) but because I want to and they unlock cool stuff.

All aboard the Cole Train baby

It never has hit me this hard, this late before.

Whenever I think of the games I’ve really gotten lost in there’s a certain reverence that comes with it. You know what I’m talking about. You just…remember the fun and can tell people about it for days. You can answer their questions and explain the lore. They start to call you the “Mass Effect, Bioshock, Destiny, Call of Duty, etc.” person.

I struggle to think of another series this has happened to me with. Xbox has been my primary platform for nigh a decade now, yet I’ve struggled to get into Halo. Not for lack of trying though. Last year I started to try and get through each Halo game in order. And no luck. It’s a great game and series no doubt, but it just hasn’t grabbed me like it has millions of others for some reason. Maybe it will soon, maybe it won’t. I guess since I didn’t have the original Xbox back in the day it carries less weight, but even so when I think of the Playstation 2 I can only think of a handful of titles that made that sort of lasting impression on me.

Shadow of the Colossus is one of those games

In this day and age we have so many amazing titles coming out almost year round, it’s hard to sometimes take a step back and play the games that we didn’t vibe with initially. Give the game/series another chance I guess. I think I’m going to go buy the Gears novels now. Great that makes me the Gears guy, doesn’t it?

Are there any games or series’ you’ve given a second chance to that you’ve since fallen in love with? Are there any others worth checking out people may have missed initially? Let me know about it in the comments below or on social media!
